The NeuroTrac Obstetric is a dual-channel TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) machine designed specifically for drug-free pain relief during labour. Four long skin electrodes are placed on your back, close to the spine, delivering gentle electrical impulses. These impulses stimulate the large nerve fibres and work on the "pain gate" principle -- reducing the pain signals that reach your brain -- while also encouraging the release of your body's own natural pain-relieving endorphins.
A handheld remote switch lets you move between two modes: a low-frequency Burst mode for the rest periods between contractions, and a high-frequency Boost mode you trigger the moment a contraction builds. It is non-invasive, safe for both mother and baby with no known side effects, and can be used on its own or alongside other forms of pain relief. Widely recommended by midwives, it is one of the most trusted obstetric TENS machines used during childbirth in the UK.
What to expect
The sensation
You will feel a gentle tingling or pulsing across your lower back. It should never be painful. Start at a low intensity and increase gradually until the tingling feels strong but comfortable -- you can turn it up further as your contractions intensify.
When to use it
For the best results, begin using the unit at the first signs of labour and continue through delivery. Clinical guidance suggests carrying on for two to three hours after birth. The earlier in labour you start, the more effective it tends to be.
Burst and Boost
Stay in low-frequency Burst mode between contractions to keep a background level of relief. As each contraction builds, press the remote to switch to high-frequency Boost, then return to Burst once it passes.
Getting started
Position the electrodes
Place the four long skin electrodes on your back, close to the spine -- two in the upper positions and two lower down. The pads are supplied in the box. It helps to position them before labour becomes intense, and your birth partner or midwife can assist.
Start in Burst mode
Switch the unit on in low-frequency Burst mode to build a comfortable background level of relief during the rest periods between contractions. This is the mode you will spend most of early labour in.
Set the intensity
Begin at zero and increase slowly using the large keypad buttons until you feel a clear but comfortable tingling. It should not be painful. You can raise the intensity gradually as your labour progresses and contractions become stronger.
Boost through contractions
As soon as you feel a contraction building, press the remote hand switch to move into high-frequency Boost mode for extra relief, then release back to Burst once it eases. Continue for two to three hours after birth for best results.

Well suited for
Consult your midwife or doctor first if you
The NeuroTrac Obstetric is a medical device intended for use during labour. It should not be used earlier in pregnancy unless specifically advised by your midwife or doctor. If you are preparing your birth plan, discuss using a TENS machine with your midwife beforehand so you feel confident using it as soon as labour begins.
